Exercise 10 – Classify the words.

You have to assist the police. You are asked to describe a person as accurately as

possible. In the following list you will find words to characterize the face, nose, eyes and

hair of a person.

a) Group the words under the four headings.

b) Then select typical characteristics of a criminal person and of a kind young girl.

plain, blue, long, fair, frizzy, fine, glossy, flat, dreamy, beautiful, ruddy, purple,

pleasant, pretty, wiry, bobbed, coarse, long, swarthy, shifty, pale, hazel, short,

curly, handsome, shingled, wavy, dimpled, deep-set, hooked, red, bright,

intelligent, crooked.

c) Classify the following expressions as “favourable” and “unfavourable”.

d) Which ones are appropriate to characterize the young girl and which ones the

criminal? Mark them with “G” and “C”.
